Grain-Free Diets/ DCM

By May 22, 2019 No Comments

The FDA is currently investigating a link between grain-free diets and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. The veterinary community is observing an increase in the number of dogs being diagnosed with this condition.

DCM causes the heart muscles to weaken, which reduces the ability of the heart to pump blood through the body normally. As DCM progresses, it leads to congestive heart failure and, ultimately, death.

Signs of DCM may include, lethargy, cough, difficulty breathing, weakness, collapse and/or loss of appetite.

At Paws & Claws, we are closely following the investigation and are waiting for more information.
